Tegan Lane went missing in 1996 and is now presumed dead.
Most people would describe the baby's mother, Keli Lane, as a nice girl. She comes from a solid, popular middle class family in the Sydney suburb of Manly. Keli's father was once one of Manly's most successful first grade rugby union coaches. In her teens and early twenties, Keli was an elite water polo player who represented her state and her country. But at the peak of her sporting career, Keli secretly gave birth three times. Despite the fact that she was living at home with her parents and was in a long-term relationship with a first grade rugby player, both parents and Duncan claim they had no idea she had ever been pregnant.
Keli Lane's extraordinary double life was exposed after Keli made false claims about her third child to an adoption agency. This led the NSW Department of Community Services to check on her history and it was discovered that, as well as having given birth to a first baby, who was adopted out, she had also given birth to a second - baby Tegan - in Sydney's Auburn Hospital on September 12, 1996. But Tegan had apparently disappeared. There was no birth certificate and no other records relating to her in any government database, school or adoption agency. Keli has consistently claimed that Tegan is alive and living with her father, but her story is now considered to be unreliable.

Clear insights into a secretive and devious woman

What happened to Tegan Lane? A young Australian woman, Keli Lane, showed up at a Sydney hospital 9 months pregnant. She claimed she was planning a home birth but couldn't contact her midwife. Staff delivered her healthy baby girl and gave her the paperwork to fill in - Keli filled in some of it, naming the baby Tegan Lee Lane. Mother and baby had no visitors, and a few days later they left the hospital quietly, without being formally discharged. A few hours later, Keli was at a wedding with her boyfriend, as if nothing had happened. When she attempted to adopt out another baby a year or so later, a sharp-eyed social worker picked up that Keli had had three babies, yet only two were accounted for, and Keli's double life imploded.
Keli Lane is probably one of the most composed and enigmatic women to ever face a murder trial. With no body, no witnesses and no crime scene - and for years, no known victim - authorities took years to pin Keli down to a murder charge. This book helps the reader walk alongside Keli, using her own words as well as the recollections of friends and transcripts of taped phone conversations, to give some insight into why a healthy young woman with a steady boyfriend would use adoption - and worse - as birth control. With unflinching, but non-judgemental insight, Chin gives us an opportunity to question why and how Keli Lane found herself in this situation.
The most intriguing aspect of Keli Lane is that she never confided in anyone throughout three pregnancies. It's probably understandable that she didn't turn to her parents or ex-boyfriend when she decided not to keep her baby, but less comprehensible that she didn't confide in a girlfriend, or even a friend's mother. Having set her mind on adoption or abortion, she cleanly removed several babies from her life without anyone in her circle knowing. With Tegan, however - the second of three children to be born - she was stuck. She missed the time frame for abortion and she knew from experience that the adoption process was emotionally draining and time-consuming, especially when you are lying to social workers about the natural father's involvement.
Keli wants the world to believe that the only person she ever confided in throughout three full-term pregnancies was the man who fathered Tegan during a one-night-stand, while they were both in committed relationships with other people. This man was prepared to accept custody of Tegan without any necessary paperwork or a blood test to prove paternity. And he has the same passion for secrecy as Keli, having managed to raise Tegan under the radar of the biggest missing person search in Australian history.
She spins lies that reveal a great deal about her attitudes, and that also shove the blame for her decisions onto other people. By far the cruellest story Keli tells is that she hid her pregnancies because she feared her parents' disapproval. Personally, I think this young woman in a rocky relationship with dreams of athletic glory, actually disposed of these babies through abortion, adoption and murder in secret, because she knew her parents would have encouraged her to keep a baby. The simple truth is, Keli did not want to have a baby. In one tragic note of truth, when she knew the police were after her, she realized she would be separated from the one child she did keep and raise. She told a friend in a taped phone conversation that she had finally figured out she was meant to be a mother. But it was too late.

Or not so nice?

This is an excellent account of the story of Keli Lane and her missing baby Tegan writtten by journalist and solicitor Rachael Jane Chin. Ten years since this story first broke into our newspapers and TV news, it is still a bizarre and inexplicable tale. The author does an excellent job at outlining step by step the events in Keli's life that led up to the mystery of what happened to her baby. By the time the case is referred to the coroner's court half way through the book we have a clear idea of Keli's life to date, her partners, her three secret births and the lies she has told to family, friends, nurses and social workers to keep those births hidden.An excellent account of a fascinating and bizarre case.

Look it's not going good to win the miles Franklin award for writing but I enjoyed it immensley because it supplied all the detail in this terrible story that I was after. It's an easy read but shocking. It's a bit...chilling. Found it hard to sleep after finishing it. What an odd person.
