Dog fights at 300k feet

The author is well-versed in his subject with very technical explanations which fit well into his story. The novel is older, but although dated, kept me enthralled to the end. The old Russia vs. U.S. is there, but with a new adversary which requires their close cooperation to defeat. Makes me want to research and learn more about the possibilities of intra-orbital flight, both military and commercial. The characters were very realistic - both good guys and bad guys.

Everything you could want in a thrilling aerospace war novel. Action cover-to-cover, including combat both in flight and in DC. Rich character development and perfectly written.

Suborbital experimental planes ran into opposition they did not expect...

Black Sky is about a joint US Russia program to develop ultra-high flying sub-orbital craft (higher and faster than the vaunted SR-71) and how it ran into a mysterious opponent, who seem to be present whenever there is a satellite or payload launch malfunction. While the writing and flying is great, the plot seem to plod along slowly, as the opponents have been shown early, albeit separate from each other and you know they are going to collide, rather than presented as a mystery from one side's view only. There's some additional plot points about spies, intrigue, bungling bureaucracy, and so on that doesn't add too much to the plot, IMHO, of course. Reads a bit like slower paced version of a Dale Brown novel.

Recommended if you like the subject and his previous books. Not a must-read though.

About the Author
An architect, landscape designer and author, Richard Weston is a Professor at the Weish School of Architecture, Cardiff University. Previous books include the monograph Alvar Aalto (winner of the 1995 Sir Banister Fletcher Prize) and the definitive monograph on the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, while The House in the Twentieth Century (2001) and Materials, Form and Architecture (2003) are both published by Laurence King.

Amazing and complete floorplans! Gives a student a great basis to present powerful drawings and plans for presentations. But also shows the architects visions of some very well known buildings that you have yet to visit.

Great source of information for architecture students

A very helpful book for a student or anyone who has anything to do with architecture. The title really says it all. If you're looking for scaled drawings, you've got one book with most of the major buildings of the 20th century. Personally, I would have added quite a few more structures but, I suppose, there is only this much you can contain in one volume without making it the size of Encyclopaedia Britannica. I'm hoping the publisher will come up with additional volume(s). One downside, not all drawings are included, i.e. there are at most 2 elevations per building.

great resource, information not 100% complete

i was very excited about this book but was dissapointed to find not all the drawings in the book are included in the cd-rom. you shouldn't trust the eps files, but make your own from the dxf's. some eps files are incomplete, at least when opened from photoshop.

sometimes a layer seems to be missing- there are no walls in the section for the guggenheim new york. some buildings will have more drawings than others, which is fine, but it's confusing to see drawings in the book and then not find them in the cd-rom.

however, it's still a great and much needed resource. i just wish the cd had been more carefully reviewed.

A Classic Of Music Analysis

This is a reprint of the 3rd edition of 1898, but that fact should not deter anyone from purchasing it. It remains an excellent analysis of Beethoven's 9 symphonies. Along with copious music quotations of the symphonies, the author has integrated some history of Beethoven's historical times and quotes letters and anecdotes that reveal not only the music but the personality of this composer.
The author's knowledge of the scores of the symphonies is extraordinary. For anyone with more than a passing interest in the symphonies of Beethoven, I can't think of a better book for the money. While it is impossible to name any composer as the greatest, Beethoven must be acknowledged as one of the great architects of musical form and expression. George Grove's book underlines the genius of this composer, and is highly recommended

An Early Study of the Beethoven Symphonies

Sir George Grove (1820 -1900)is best-known as the writer of the original "Dictionary of Music and Musicians" which, with its many updates and versions over the years, has become the standard English reference work on classical music. In 1896, Grove wrote "Beethoven and his Nine Symphonies" which, unlike the "Dictionary" is still read today in the form in which Grove wrote it. I have recently returned to Grove's study as a guide in listening to and reviewing the Beethoven symphonies in the recordings by David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich and have learned a great deal.

Grove's book is written in an accessible late-Victorian style. He devotes a chapter to each of the nine symphonies. He begins with a summary of the instrumentation, publication history and early metronome marks of the symphonies. Grove offers material on Beethoven's life at the time each symphony was composed and describes Beethoven's compositional process. He offers information on early performances and on the reception of each work, including a great deal of commentary from the works of later composers.

But the highlight of the study is Grove's movement-by-movement analysis of each symphony. It is a difficult skill to write about music in a way that amateurs may follow; and Grove succeeds admirably. He gives the score for the principal themes and highlights of each movement and discusses them in a way that anyone with a basic skill in reading music can follow easily. I used Grove many years ago when I was just coming to the Beethoven symphonies, and I continue to learn from his book. Much of what Grove says is still current in studies of the symphonies. For example, in discussing the Seventh Symphony, Grove aptly describes it as the most romantic of the nine, and he points out how the rhythm of the symphony may be scanned in terms of the meters and "feet" of poetry. Maynard Solomon has made the same points in detail in his essay on the Seventh Symphony in his recent book "Late Beethoven".

In addition to the musical analyses, Grove writes with great passion about Beethoven and his work. His study is replete with allusions to the works and writings of other composers that illuminate his analysis of Beethoven. He also gives a great deal of biography, some of which must be used with caution as Grove relied on the biographical writings of Anton Schindler about Beethoven. Schindler has been discredited as as source by modern scholars. Grove has a partiality for large-scale romantic performances of Beethoven, and I don't think he would have been overly impressed with the modern Zinman performances that I just heard and greatly enjoyed. For example, his book is full of strictures against performing Beethoven too fast.

Grove clearly shares the prevailing Nineteenth Century view that Beethoven was the greatest of all composers in the depth, variety, structure, and moods of his symphonies. Grove's enthusiasm and love for his subject is eloquent. He concludes his book as follows:

"These great works he did as no one ever did, and probably no one ever will.... Music will advance in richness, scope, and difficulty; but such music as Beethoven's great instrumental works, in which thought, emotion, melody, and romance combine with extraordinary judgment and common sense, and a truly wonderful industry, to make a perfect whole, can hardly any more be written. The time for such an event, such a concurrence of the man and the circumstances, will not again arrive. There can never be a second Beethoven or a second Shakespeare. However much orchestras may improve and execution increase, Beethoven's Symphonies will always remain at the head of music as Shakespeare's plays are at the head of the literature of the modern world."

Some readers in the early 21st Century may question Grove's adulation of Beethoven. Be that as it may, Beethoven's symphonies have remained an inspiration to an untold number of listeners, including myself, and will almost certainly remain so. Grove's book remains highly valuable for those wanting to explore in detail the richness of the Beethoven symphonies.

Great analyses of Beethoven's symphonies

This classic in the field of music analysis is a great source of ideas for anyone interested in serious study of Beethoven's symphonies. George Grove is one of the great musicologists of the 19th century; he is also the editor of the well-known "Dictionary of Music and Musicians."

An intermediate level of musical knowledge is necessary to appreciate the text. It is full of musical illustrations, but the terminology Grove uses is probably not too jargony for a knowledgeable lay-reader or amateur musician.

Grove also includes biographical information along with the analyses, making for a great overview of or introduction to Beethoven's symphonies.

About the Author
Susan F. Carson is a professor of education in the College of Education at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Carson’s scholarship and research focuses include the implementation of peace education in urban K-12 schools, social justice and peace education with a multicultural emphasis, and peace and justice studies in international education. She developed a model program with Kent School Services Network (a social service network with 21 organizations and six school districts), teaching undergraduate students at identified schools serving homeless youth. Dr. Carson’s 2010 Fulbright Award to research “Principles and Practices of Caring Communities: Women’s Participation in the Public Spheres of Education in Contemporary India” demonstrated her effectiveness as a cross-cultural educator and negotiator. Her international research in peace education has included work with the University of Education, Padagogische Hochschule Schwabisch Gmund, Germany; Lucknow University, Lucknow, India; the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; the Northern Council for Integrated Education in Belfast; and the Consultores Associados in Uberaba, Brazil.

What a Delightful Book!

Every once in awhile I run across a book that is so much more than even its author perhaps envisioned. This book is one of those rare treats — a brief and lovely read that uses personal narratives as a way to explore caring and the potential for peace in today’s world.

The author, Dr. Susan Carson, believes that storytelling can become a powerful tool for change in the hands of those who understand how to use it effectively. A dedicated educator of teachers and a gifted teacher herself, by sharing inspiring stories of real people who overcame adversity, Carson shows us how to use narratives inside and outside the classroom.

In addition to the individual stories, Carson helps the reader understand how each narrative fits within a larger context. For instance, Isaiah’s story is presented within the greater context of the criminal justice system, where so many minority males discover they are permanently excluded from the rest of society. Hannah’s story of proactively confronting her mental illness and finding her own path to wellness illustrates the capabilities each of us have to take responsibility for our life and health, in spite of a severely flawed mental health system. And John’s story of overcoming the challenge of growing up in an orphanage, rising to play football at the Big Ten level, acquiring a Ph.D. and founding an orphanage of his own provides inspiration to each of us; we can, indeed, become something greater than our origins would seem to dictate.
