Tegan Lane went missing in 1996 and is now presumed dead.
Most people would describe the baby's mother, Keli Lane, as a nice girl. She comes from a solid, popular middle class family in the Sydney suburb of Manly. Keli's father was once one of Manly's most successful first grade rugby union coaches. In her teens and early twenties, Keli was an elite water polo player who represented her state and her country. But at the peak of her sporting career, Keli secretly gave birth three times. Despite the fact that she was living at home with her parents and was in a long-term relationship with a first grade rugby player, both parents and Duncan claim they had no idea she had ever been pregnant.
Keli Lane's extraordinary double life was exposed after Keli made false claims about her third child to an adoption agency. This led the NSW Department of Community Services to check on her history and it was discovered that, as well as having given birth to a first baby, who was adopted out, she had also given birth to a second - baby Tegan - in Sydney's Auburn Hospital on September 12, 1996. But Tegan had apparently disappeared. There was no birth certificate and no other records relating to her in any government database, school or adoption agency. Keli has consistently claimed that Tegan is alive and living with her father, but her story is now considered to be unreliable.
In this probing, investigative work, Rachael Chin sifts through Keli's background for answers to this most baffling of cases. Who and where is Tegan's father? Why did Keli feel compelled to keep her pregnancies secret, and how could Keli's friends and family have been so in the dark? Why did Keli arrange for the formal adoption of her first and third babies, but not Tegan? Does the fierce, competitive culture of elite sports such as water polo induce irrational and dangerous behaviour? Or is there a more sinister reason for Keli's behaviour? Clear insights into a secretive and devious woman

What happened to Tegan Lane? A young Australian woman, Keli Lane, showed up at a Sydney hospital 9 months pregnant. She claimed she was planning a home birth but couldn't contact her midwife. Staff delivered her healthy baby girl and gave her the paperwork to fill in - Keli filled in some of it, naming the baby Tegan Lee Lane. Mother and baby had no visitors, and a few days later they left the hospital quietly, without being formally discharged. A few hours later, Keli was at a wedding with her boyfriend, as if nothing had happened. When she attempted to adopt out another baby a year or so later, a sharp-eyed social worker picked up that Keli had had three babies, yet only two were accounted for, and Keli's double life imploded.
Keli Lane is probably one of the most composed and enigmatic women to ever face a murder trial. With no body, no witnesses and no crime scene - and for years, no known victim - authorities took years to pin Keli down to a murder charge. This book helps the reader walk alongside Keli, using her own words as well as the recollections of friends and transcripts of taped phone conversations, to give some insight into why a healthy young woman with a steady boyfriend would use adoption - and worse - as birth control. With unflinching, but non-judgemental insight, Chin gives us an opportunity to question why and how Keli Lane found herself in this situation.
The most intriguing aspect of Keli Lane is that she never confided in anyone throughout three pregnancies. It's probably understandable that she didn't turn to her parents or ex-boyfriend when she decided not to keep her baby, but less comprehensible that she didn't confide in a girlfriend, or even a friend's mother. Having set her mind on adoption or abortion, she cleanly removed several babies from her life without anyone in her circle knowing. With Tegan, however - the second of three children to be born - she was stuck. She missed the time frame for abortion and she knew from experience that the adoption process was emotionally draining and time-consuming, especially when you are lying to social workers about the natural father's involvement.
Keli wants the world to believe that the only person she ever confided in throughout three full-term pregnancies was the man who fathered Tegan during a one-night-stand, while they were both in committed relationships with other people. This man was prepared to accept custody of Tegan without any necessary paperwork or a blood test to prove paternity. And he has the same passion for secrecy as Keli, having managed to raise Tegan under the radar of the biggest missing person search in Australian history.
She spins lies that reveal a great deal about her attitudes, and that also shove the blame for her decisions onto other people. By far the cruellest story Keli tells is that she hid her pregnancies because she feared her parents' disapproval. Personally, I think this young woman in a rocky relationship with dreams of athletic glory, actually disposed of these babies through abortion, adoption and murder in secret, because she knew her parents would have encouraged her to keep a baby. The simple truth is, Keli did not want to have a baby. In one tragic note of truth, when she knew the police were after her, she realized she would be separated from the one child she did keep and raise. She told a friend in a taped phone conversation that she had finally figured out she was meant to be a mother. But it was too late.

Or not so nice?

This is an excellent account of the story of Keli Lane and her missing baby Tegan writtten by journalist and solicitor Rachael Jane Chin. Ten years since this story first broke into our newspapers and TV news, it is still a bizarre and inexplicable tale. The author does an excellent job at outlining step by step the events in Keli's life that led up to the mystery of what happened to her baby. By the time the case is referred to the coroner's court half way through the book we have a clear idea of Keli's life to date, her partners, her three secret births and the lies she has told to family, friends, nurses and social workers to keep those births hidden.An excellent account of a fascinating and bizarre case.

Look it's not going good to win the miles Franklin award for writing but I enjoyed it immensley because it supplied all the detail in this terrible story that I was after. It's an easy read but shocking. It's a bit...chilling. Found it hard to sleep after finishing it. What an odd person.

HERMAN AGUINIS is Associate Professor of Management at the Business School of the University of Colorado, Denver. Like its first five editions, this book is an interdisciplinary-oriented, research-based HR text. Perhaps the most significant change in the current edition is the addition of a new coauthor, Herman Aguinis. Herman brings considerable content and methodological expertise, and this edition of the text reflects those strengths. As in the past, our subject matter is personnel psychology—the application of psychological research and theory to human resource management (HRM) in organizations. As an applied area of psychology, personnel psychology seeks to make, organizations more effective and more satisfying as places to work.

Personnel psychology represents the overlap between psychology and HRM. It is a subfield within HRM, excluding, for example, such topics as labor law, compensation and benefits, safety, and industrial relations. Personnel psychology is also a subfield with in industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology-the study of the behavior of men and women in work settings. Today, with the tremendous growth of I/O psychology in many directions, HRM is appropriately considered only one of many areas to which I/O psychologists have turned their attention.

As in the first five editions, we have included material of a decidedly theoretical, statistical, or psychometric nature. No doubt some readers will criticize the book on these grounds and charge that "things just aren't done that way in the real world." Perhaps not, for we agree that some of the ideas in the book are used by very few organizations. However, many topics in earlier editions that may have seemed "far out" are now considered "mainstream"—for example, validity generalization, statistical power analysis, and situational interviews. The book is designed to be forward-looking and progressive, and, even though some of the material is presented in a conventional manner, with a dose of statistical, psychometric, or psychological theory thrown in, we believe that in the last analysis nothing is more practical.

In writing this book, we make two assumptions about our readers: (1) They are familiar with the general problems of HRM or I/O psychology, and (2) they have some background in fundamental statistics—at least enough to understand statistical procedures on a conceptual level, and preferably enough to compute and interpret tests of statistical significance. As in earlier editions, our goals are (1) to challenge the field to advance rather than simply to document past practice, (2) to present a model toward which professionals should aim, and (3) to present scientific procedure and fundamental theory so that the serious student can develop a solid foundation on which to build a broad base of knowledge.

Our overall objective is to integrate psychological theory with tools and methods that will enable the student or professional to translate theory into practice effectively. We are well aware that in the complex and dynamic environment in which we live and work, scientific and technological advances are occurring faster than ever before. Hence, education must be a lifelong effort if one is to avoid what Armer (1970) calls the "Paul Principle": Over time, people become uneducated and therefore incompetent to perform at a level at which they once performed adequately. If the book projects this one message, then the HR profession will be enriched immeasurably.

The response to the first five editions of this book in psychology departments and in business and professional schools has been particularly gratifying. However, new ideas and research findings in all the areas covered by the book made a sixth edition necessary in order to reflect the state of the art in personnel psychology. We have tried to do just that, as reflected in the fact that more than 500 of the references in this sixth edition are new! Year by year, the field continues to advance rapidly. Here is sample of what is new in the sixth edition:

• At a general level, we have interwoven four themes throughout the book: technology, strategy, globalization, and social responsibility. As in earlier editions, each chapter includes updated discussion questions to help students reflect on what they have read.
• Chapter 1 provides extensive treatment of the impact of globalization, technology, and demographic changes on markets, jobs, people, the structure of organizations, and the very nature of work itself.
• We have updated Chapter 2, on legal issues in HRM, extensively, based on new developments in case law in the areas of age and national origin discrimination, disabilities, family and medical leave, leave for military service, testing, sexual harassment, "English only" rules, and preferential selection. In all instances, we offer preventive actions and practical tips.
• Chapter 3 retains its emphasis on utility or decision theory as a way of thinking, along with a view of organizations as open systems. We then present a model of the employment process as a network of sequential, interdependent decisions that serves as a roadmap for the remainder of the book.
• Chapter 4 has a more detailed discussion of criteria as multidimensional and dynamic, including the topics of typical versus maximum performance, counterproductive behaviors, and contextual-versus-task performance. There is a discussion of how various conceptualizations of criteria affect resulting validity coefficients.
• The emphasis in Chapter 5 has changed from the previous performance-appraisal to a broader performance-management approach. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the newest approach to occupational information—the O*Net.

In addition to our traditional discussion of methods to forecast workforce supply and demand, we include new sections on management succession plans and CEO succession.
• We discuss the revolutionary impact of the Web on the recruitment practices of employers and job seekers in Chapter 11. We also discuss research-based findings on the effects on recruitment of organizational image, characteristics of recruiters, sources, and downsizing. New sections consider the impact of hiring-management systems and intelligent software that processes resumes, plus the process of job searching from the applicant's perspective.
• Chapter 12 discusses the extent of response distortion in application blanks and biodata and how to minimize it; there is also more detail on differences between overt and personality-based honesty tests and an entirely new section on computer-based screening, including virtual reality screening. We have revised our treatment of employment interviews substantially, including social/interpersonal factors, individual differences, the effects of structure, and the use of alternative media.
• Chapter 13 emphasizes that the utility of a selection system includes more than the validity coefficient. It discusses recent technical refinements in the computation of utility estimates and includes a new section on managers' perceptions of utility analysis and how such information affects their decisions regarding the implementation of new selection systems. Finally, the chapter includes an entirely new section on multiattribute utility analysis as a means to incorporate stakeholder input in estimating the usefulness of a selection system.

Outstanding summary of the I/O psychology field

Wayne Cascio, acknowledged as a leader in the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, has written an excellent overview of the field. Cascio's writing style is clear and engaging. Although written as a textbook, this book can stay on any practitioner's bookshelf as a reference work, a condensed handbook covering most of the most common topics in I/O psychology. It assumes a graduate school level of familiarity with applied psychology and statistics.

Nice, but needs more thorough text editing.

While this text has the potential to be a very useful tool for practitioners and academics alike, I was a little disappointed to find multiple errors in the text. One critical error was the incorrect citation of a research finding. Specifically, on page 56, it states, "In addition, individuals' motivation (i.e., direction, level, and persistence of effort exerted) is more strongly related to maximum than typical performance (Klehe & Anderson, 2007)." This is not what Klehe and Anderson (2007) found in their study, they in fact found the opposite, which is consistent with motivational theory (that motivation is more strongly related to typical rather than maximum performance).

This incorrect citation makes me wonder how many other research findings they discuss are miscited. I encourage anyone using this text (and any other) to always go to the original research articles to confirm findings before using them to make decisions.

Great Book For Those In I/O Psychology

For those studying the field of Industrial Organizational Psychology, this book is a great introduction of what the field teaches and what specific skills is required in the practice of Human Resource Management. Many useful information is given on how employers select certain candidates for a position as well as how those specific candidates must perform in their job daily to have optimal performance. In short, this book will cover information on job titles, their governed laws, salaries, employee interactions and what performance means and looks like in a typical job setting.

Who will love it: The students that want to pursue a career in Industrial Organizational psychology and want to learn all the basics and skills one needs to excel in that career.

Who will hate it: Anyone who doesn't want to learn anything about corporate business models and how employees and employers are suppose to manage themselves and others. Those who do not like anything to do with how Human Resource Management fits into a job setting will not appreciate this book.

Beware: Geared to Grades 5-8, NOT Grades 3-6

This is a good book for using pattern blocks to hone a better understanding of fractions, geometry, etc.
However, although Amazon.com's title indicates that the book is geared to children in Grades 3-6,
and the picture of the book cover also states Grades 3-6, the actual book cover lists Grades 5-8.
The blurb written by the publishers is correct, it is geared more toward middle school than to
elementary school.
My students are in grades 4 to 5, so I can at least use parts of this book for the fifth graders
and perhaps for more advanced 4th graders.

To analyze and fully test this hypothesis, an innovative ecological network dynamics model is defined, designed, and developed. The modeling approach, which seeks to emulate features of real-world ecological networks, does not make a priori assumptions about ecological network dynamics, but rather lets the dynamics develop as the model simulation runs. Model analysis results corroborate the central hypothesis. Additional important insights and principles are suggested by the model analysis results and by the other supporting investigations of this book – and can serve as a basis for going-forward complex system dynamics research, not only for ecological systems but for complex systems in general.

About the Author
Bill Yackinous has had a distinguished 34-year career as a systems engineer at Bell Laboratories. Throughout his career he worked to solve systems problems for Bell Labs and for its clients - both domestically and internationally. Bill has earned the highest technical honors at Bell Labs. He was named a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 1986, a Bell Labs Fellow in 1992, and a Consulting Member of Technical Staff in 2000. Bell Labs Fellow is the most prestigious technical honor at Bell Labs - and among the most prestigious across research and development institutions throughout the world.

At Bell Labs, Bill acquired a very significant breadth and depth of systems and engineering knowledge. He made important and innovative contributions to systems thinking and engineering system development. Bill’s global perspective has taken him around the world - supporting the local Bell Labs teams and their clients. He has served as a systems engineering consultant for both executive-level and working-level groups in Japan, England, Malaysia, France, and Canada.

After earning a PhD in Ecology at the University of Georgia’s Eugene P. Odum School of Ecology, Bill is now pursuing his goal of beneficially applying the skills, perspectives, methods, and techniques of the systems approach and systems engineering to increase understanding of complex ecological systems.
