Between Marco Polo in the late 13th century and French priest Abbe Huc in the 1840s, practically no European set foot in western China – then considered one of the most difficult regions in the world for road, rail and river navigation given its formidable topography of high mountains, deep valleys and great rivers. This isolation gave western China somewhat of a reputation amongst westerners as a hidden El Dorado – a place of great wealth and fertility. From the 1850s onwards, as the Victorian age was in full swing, Britons – and other westerners – began to develop a taste for overseas adventure, exploration and trade as the British Empire expanded its reach across the globe. Britain already had a strong hold in Hong Kong and was present in coastal treaty ports in China, but the Chinese market had not yet produced the massive increase in trade that many colonial expansionists had hoped for. A few adventurous souls began to believe that if access could be gained to the whole of China, through its inland ports, then access could be gained to the world’s largest market with some 400 million people – the size of the whole of Europe. This was not only access for trade purposes. Missionaries believed that the scope of the work they could do in inland China was endless, with a huge population most of whom had never heard of the word of God; and botanists and natural scientists wondered at the myriad exotic and as yet unknown species which flourished in China’s sub-tropical south-western corner. Others were just curious and had an appetite – and the budget to match – for visiting foreign faraway lands and the challenge of the unknown.Politically, opening up inland China was important to the British. Their aim was to develop a trade route from British India and Burma through China to British settlements in China’s coastal cities such as Canton and Hong Kong, as part of the competition between western powers for influence in Asia known as the Great Game. The French in particular were Britain’s adversaries for influence in western China, given the existing French stronghold in Indochina. French hopes were to reach the south-western Chinese province of Yunnan via the Mekong river through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. On the basis of these dreams, hundreds of British travellers and explorers set their sights on the Yangtze River – the main access route to the heart and western regions of China – and in particular the region of Chongqing (then known as Chungking) in the western Chinese province of Sichuan – the biggest metropolis of western China. It was - and still is - a gritty inland city, worlds apart from the relatively cosmopolitan cities of China’s eastern seaboard. This book tells the story of their lives in this inland treaty port city, and surrounding region, from the 1870s to just after the Second World War when, for several years, Chungking served as the capital of China. It details the achievements and lasting impact of the British in western China in the fields of diplomacy, trade, culture, science, education and religion. This includes introducing cricket and the first football match to the region; the printing press and the camera; the first steamship to sail through the treacherous Three Gorges – now tamed by the world’s largest dam; and the inspiration for the longest book on China ever to be written in the English language. The idea for this book came during my own time spent living in Chongqing from 2007 – 2010 as Political Consul at the British Consulate-General in the city. Chongqing was not the easiest of diplomatic postings. I started to wonder about the Europeans who came to Chongqing 150 years before me, and the city they must have experienced. This book stands as a record of Chongqing’s European past and the contributions of many foreigners to the city’s development, lest it should all soon disappear amidst China’s rush to develop.

Alexandra Needham has been a member of the British diplomatic service since 2004. From 2007 – 2010 she served as Political Consul at the British Consulate-General in the Chongqing (formerly Chungking) in western China, now one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Chongqing was not the easiest of diplomatic postings, and the idea for this book came from that time there. She currently works in Laos as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Vientiane.

Lars George has been involved with HBase since 2007, and became a full HBase committer in 2009. Each page contains the name of a celebration or observance, a simply written paragraph describing it, and an illustration showing people participating in it. Two pages of notes give more specific details. The basic text gives too little information for most children. For example, readers unfamiliar with Loy Krathong, Diwali, or Eid al-Fitr won't learn when or where they are celebrated unless they turn to concluding notes, which are written on a higher reading level and are in much smaller print. Colorful, simply shaped cut-paper pictures show people engaged in the celebrations. These spirited and cheerful illustrations are the book's strength, but the presentation is too confusing for the intended audience. Kid loves it, a few drawbacks

Well, I have to say that my 10 month old loves this book. He usually grabs this one if he's not in sleepy mode. I am glad to have a book like this that is colorful, full of happy faces and will entertain a wide age range.

Unfortunately, the pages are a little thin/weak and have quickly been destroyed by my child. To be expected from an infant, but I would appreciate slightly thicker, more durable pages since this is a book geared towards kids that can be useful for many years.

The picture for Dia de los Muertos is a bit off, since it is not a time that kids play with pinatas. Maybe some other inaccuracies in the book, but otherwise I like the entertainment value of the book with a nod towards intercultural understanding. I will probably be buying another copy when my child is a bit older.

I love the illustrations in this book and it is one of my children's favorites. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because when it describes the Fourth of July it states "When freedom first rang on our land", I don't feel comfortable with that line. We cannot say that the indigenous people of this land weren't free before being invaded.

Great intro to holidays around the world for young children.

This is a very brightly designed book that has fantastic illustrations. The text is easy to read for a first level reader. More importantly, each holiday has a detailed explaination in the back of the book. Great illustrations by Peter Linenthal. The only complaint I have is that the author chose the Jewish holiday of Hannakah instead of Passsover or Rosh Hashana. Hannakah is a minor holiday.

Grounded, compassionate teaching about healing from within the Light in humility, yielding empowerment.

An experience I had with Jonathan and about 20 other people one weekend about 6 years ago changed my life irrevocably. I didn't even know I was on the edge of such a change. I thought I had certain things figured out "for sure" and other things were a jumble. I just needed to unjumble those things and then I would be "all better." I learned or began to learn a lot that weekend - I'm still learning from that weekend. One day I will study with Jonathan again. In the meantime, I now have this gift of his book where as I read I can hear his cadence and be reminded of what I learned while also receiving the gift of new aspects of the healing journey.

The teachings within this textbook ignores no aspect of the self. I mean, it is acknowledged that we are human beings experiencing this 3-D reality and there is no call to rise above that or overcome it or disparage it in order to achieve healing and growth. Rather, we learn how each part of the whole serves the whole, the wider community, and the other individual parts of our being. This is so key.There is no need to escape out of our physicality to experience healing or to work with the Light. Jonathan explains why and throughout the book teaches us to integrate all the parts, all the aspects. Our healing is integral and integrated.

My perception of another encouraging message throughout the book is, "Take your time." There is no deadline to healing. It is an unfolding that happens throughout my life. It isn't something to "get through." It's this amazing event at every turn in the Now. That's really beautiful.

As someone usually wary of those who call themselves "spiritual teachers" or "healers" who also has a sensitive, um, well, bs meter, my experience with him, my gut and my Heart tell me that Jonathan is the real deal. He is a teacher and a healer; he is real and human. His teachings are empowering while also reminding me to embody gratefulness and humility.

Similarly to the way I revisit my Heart Camp weekend years ago, I know I will re-read this book and each time, find a different aspect to consider and explore for my healing.

I am literally experiencing healing throughout my whole self as I read and relate to what you have so generously shared in this "work of art". The message is one of being both human and beyond human. The clear insightful way that you teach us about our humanity and our innate ability to tap into our connection with the Divine is exquisite. I have walked this path for fifteen years and am now beginning to work with others. I have had beautiful teachers along the way and I am telling everyone I know about this extraordinary book of yours! Now I understand how one can become excited about a "bucket list".....I hope to meet you in person one day!

The Conqueror made simple

This book is a nice easy read for a little William 101. I picked this as my first book to learn the actual story of William the Conqueror. The text is easy yet very informative. This is a good starter book before moving into a more detailed biography. Jacob Abbott gives a short intro into William's Viking ancestors who were the first Dukes of Normandy. Then we get a chapter on William's father, Duke Robert who named his illegitimate son heir. From their William had to overcome his mark of birth and assert himself as a worthy heir to Normandy. William was always proving himself as he grew into a great warrior and leader. He fights off would be relatives who seek to take his throne and even challenges the King of France. Mr. Abbott explains how he came to be named heir to the English throne by his cousin Edward, Saxon King of England. Then we have the build up and ultimate crossing of the English Channel and the battle of Hastings in 1066. Finally we move to the beginning of his reign of England and the "Normanization" of Britain begins. Ultimately his death is caused by his oldest son being in constant rebellion and William is wounded on campaign. Although his end was not glorious, his legacy lives on in Britain today. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about William, Normandy and the Battle of Hastings.

About the Author
Chuck's interest in the Kennedys began when his father worked for Bobby Kennedy in the Justice Department in the early 1960's, and he was able to attend both JFK's inauguration and his funeral. He currently lives in an undisclosed location outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife and dog.

A Must Read

Chuck Helppie's "Kennedy Must Be Killed" is an intriguing and interesting book. It guides the reader through a fascinating era in American history. I got a very different perspective on JFK as I read about his personal life and how he handled crucial national and international incidents. I was particularly struck by the image Helppie portrayed about Kennedy's ideas on civil rights and his inept handling of Kruschev and Castro.
The main character, Patrick, was an idealistic patriot and I came to emphathize with his frustrations and need to take action to ensure America's future. I was drawn into his world as he met some of the most important political leaders of the 1950s and 1960s. I loved how Helppie interwove Patrick's personal and professional relationships with the Kennedys throughout the book. And, of course, I was fascinated by the interesting encounters with people like Sam Giancana, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe.
This book kept me interested from beginning to end and I was constantly amazed and surprised by the inter-workings of our government and how the assassination of JFK could have been master-minded by a group of powerful leaders. Chuck Helppie's depth of knowledge is astounding. I found myself reliving many historical events of the 50s and 60s and questioning what I thought was reality and what was fiction.
Even for those who are skeptical about a conspiracy theory in Kennedy's death, this story has deep credibilty and is an exciting read.

A Plausible Challenge to Long-Held Assumptions

I am not a conspiracy-theorist and have long-believed that Oswald probably acted alone, which makes me an unlikely candidate to enjoy this book as much as I did. But author Chuck Helppie weaves real events and plausible speculation together in such a way as to make me wonder, "Hmmm, is it possible that I've been wrong all this time?".

One aspect of the book I found fascinating was the way it forced me, and will no doubt force other readers, to reconsider long-held beliefs. I was in first grade when JFK was killed and remember coming home from a Cub Scout outing - we visited a WWII submarine in the Cleveland harbor - and finding my staunchly-Republican grandmother weeping as she ironed a sheet. I grew up with and have maintained a view of JFK as a shining beacon of all that is right about the promise of America. Suffice to say that JFK does not come off as a shining beacon of anything other than timidity and debauchery in this book. The readers' views of significant historical figures such as Senator Joseph McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover may also be challenged by Chuck Helppie's work.

Finally, I note the book is published by iUniverse. This is Helppie's first novel and it should be encouraging to any writer, in this era when there are ever-fewer opportunities in traditional publishing, to see the absolutely first-class package which can be achieved through companies like iUniverse. Technology has obviated the need for the shoddy products of the old vanity press, and Helppie's novel demonstrates that where there's a will to tell a great story there is also a way.

Well worth the read.

After reading this book, I am left with believing one of two things:

1)The author was hip-deep in research and did his homework and put together a story that, while fiction, is enjoyable to read.

or

2)The author was a shooter on the grassy knoll and really did shoot JFK....and the only way to tell the story is as fiction. This spin may make you think I'm crazy, but folks have been telling stories of classified operations for years...because they market them as fiction.

The shooting and blood left outside the TSBD was reported in at least one newspaper or newscast during the aftermath of the assassination...that stuck out to me.

Use of Mauser rifles to carry out the shooting, due to the Italian Carcano POS being crap.

The shooting of JD Tippitt by two men, as reported by many witnesses...shell casings left behind...from Oswalds revolver? NOT.

I must admit that this story certainly raised an eyebrow in regards to JFK and his philandering ways. If this were a true portrayal of JFK, RFK and father Joe Kennedy, it is easy to see why JFK would be in the crosshairs.

About the Author
Scott A. Miller (Ph.D., Developmental Psychology, University of Minnesota, 1971) is Professor of Psychology at the University of Florida, where he regularly teaches survey courses in developmental psychology at the undergraduate and graduate levels and a course on research methods in developmental psychology. He is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association Division 7, Developmental Psychology, and in the Society for Research in Child Development. His areas of research are cognitive development, social cognition, and Piaget. He has authored numerous research articles in such journals as Child Development, the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Cognitive Development, the Journal of Cognition & Development, and the British Journal of Developmental Psychology. He is also an experienced textbook writer. In addition to Developmental Research Methods, he is a coauthor on Flavell, Miller, and Miller's Cognitive Development, Fourth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2002) and Vasta, Miller, and Miller's Child Psychology, Fourth Edition (Wiley, 2004).

OK Graduate Research Methods Course Textbook

This book was required for my introductory Research Methods course in graduate school. There was nothing bad about this book, as it definitely provided the required information, but it was not as inviting as the other textbook we used with it in the same class. This is not the type of book you'll just peruse for more insight, though our other textbook was.
