The book is an excellent resource for those wanting to know about the history and execution of pak mei, as well as the intricacies of gung fu in general. His discussions of the various types of power used and how to exert it are found in few other texts on gung fu.

I was slightly disappointed in the fact that there are no illustrations of key stances or techniques for pak mei. Given that this is considered a "forbidden" style in some lineages, I should not be surprised. If you are a practitioner of the art, this will be useful background. If you are a martial arts researcher, this book would be a valuable addition regarding a little known internal style from the south. If you want to learn pak mei, this book will only whet your appetite.

Readers of Douglas's autobiography, The Ragman's Son (LJ 10/15/88), will speculate on the parallels in his first novel, which also chronicles the rise to fame of a Russian-Jewish emigre in Hollywood moviedom. The first half of the book alternates chapters about Moishe, who becomes director Danny Dennison, with the story of Luba, a Polish refugee who uses sex as a survival tool. She is a London prostitute when she first encounters the successful but unhappy protagonist, and he is at once captivated by her honest charm and the stories she tells about her hardknocks past. Luba makes Danny realize that he has prostituted his talent and denied a long-suppressed secret. This awkward attempt at fiction is devoid of both style and substance, but public libraries should anticipate high demand from the legion of Douglas's fans. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/15/90.

A Lucky Find

Anyone who adores Disney animation will cherish a book like this one written by two of the "Nine Old Men", Ollie Johnston, and Frank Thomas. It contains page after page of illustrations but more importantly, a fully in depth explanation of how animation evolved over time. It's an exceptional book in all regards, and will take some time to actually read but; who's complaining about that? While the word "inbetweens" may have a simplistic meaning to you or to me, the authors go into depth, with matching illustrations, to show exactly how this function works within the studio. Animators do the first and last artwork of each movement (let's say of Mickey Mouse jumping) and then it is up to the inbetweener to make this action become "live." Sound simple? Not very, as it turns out. The version I have is a second printing: 1984 and in reasonably good shape. As a consummate Disney enthusiast, this is a lucky find indeed.

Hilarious, true genius.

One for the fans definitely, but I do think that even if you've never heard of the Count and have just picked up the book (wash your hands afterwards btw) and are idly flicking through it, it is so consistently mad (just the right amount of mad though) and funny that you will quickly be hooked. KRIS AKABUSSI, MELVIN HEYES AND UNA STUBBS CAN'T ALL BE WRONG. DAMN I'VE knocked the caps lock on again. Whose bright idea was to put it there?
