Excellent coverage of geometrical optics for beginners

This book develops geometrical optics from the laws of refraction and reflection. Basically as a ray or directed line of light impinges on the surface of a lens, that point of intersection is viewed as being part of and surrounded by a very small or infinitesimal flat piece of lens surface to which these laws are applied. The infinitesimal piece of surface coincides smoothly with the tangent plane or for the usual rotationally symmetric lens with the tangent line at that point. From this the ray-tracing equations are derived. If the rays are nearly parallel to the axis of rotation which is the optical axis, sines and tangents of angles in these ray-tracing equations are sufficiently represented by the angles themselves in units of radians. This is called the paraxial approximation. This is used for the thick lens formula as well as analysis of optical instruments. In addition to this I found a rarity. A diacaustic or caustic is actually derived in the first few pages. This is an envelope of rays (check out Clairaut's Equation for the idea) and it is shown to be responsible for the apparent shift in position for an object under water. The physical optics part is more descriptive and much less rigorous only going as far as wave superposition. It should be noted that this book is frequently cited in the popular Hecht and Zajac text for in depth derivations and discussions on geometrical optics. The development of the paraxial approximation in this text is sufficient to enable the reader to understand the theory of the Delano Diagram in optical design. Classic text!

Much of what we are reading today, was researched and presented back in 1961 with Likert's findings. Easy to read and well documented, the is a classic that is often overlooked for the groundbreaking work it represents. Likert presents a thorough reivew of the research done at that time and also clearly presents and explains his notion of "the development of a better system of managing the human resources of an organization". His research methods, his findings, and his notions of effective management have held up over time and are clearly visable in the work being done today in the field. I would recommend this as required reading for any student of management.

Purnell from his own life experience shows the dangers and subtelties of singleness, loneliness, dating. Guarding one's heart is a Biblical paramont and so too does this book suggest that be in a Christian single's mind when entering or preparing for relationships.

Divorce would certainly decrease if more attention and effort was placed on the prenuptial stages and this volume is great asset to this.

This book changed the way I see dating and committed relationships in general. I have been making so many mistakes and I now know why I've had my heart broken so many times. The author was single until around 40 so he knows how to navigate the single waters in a healthy way.
He offers practical advice on how identify the real thing. Thanks Mr. Purnell, I feel grateful to you for sharing your experience. You said all the things that mom and dad were afraid to say.
